"Our student has just started 12th grade. Is it already too late for international universities?"

The short answer is: No, it is not completely too late. However, at this point it is necessary to assess the process realistically. An application process that begins in 12th grade cannot recover certain preparations that could have been made in earlier years. Even so, with the right strategy, strong applications can still be prepared.

In this article, we outline a realistic application plan for students starting in 12th grade.

First, the Realities Must Be Acknowledged

Students starting in 12th grade may no longer have a time advantage in certain areas.

Activity Profile

In the Common App system used for US applications, students present the activities they have built throughout high school. Activities developed in grades 9–11 generally form the foundation of an application. Building an entirely new and deep activity profile in 12th grade is difficult.

However, existing activities can:

• be presented more effectively
• have their leadership dimension highlighted
• be positioned correctly within the application narrative

Competitions and Long-Term Achievements

Achievements such as science olympiads or national competitions typically require lengthy preparation periods. For this reason, adding these kinds of accomplishments in 12th grade is often not possible.

Academic History

When evaluating applications, universities generally look at a student's entire high school performance. Grades can be improved in 12th grade, but the academic record from previous years cannot be changed entirely.

Europe

UK applications are generally submitted through the UCAS system. Preparing an application in 12th grade for many strong UK universities is still very much possible.
